As an 1985 entering freshman, of all the things that I have read lately that make me feel less than young, your "back in my day" intro really hit the sweet spot. Man, I'm ancient.
I remember going to the "newer" category killer bookstore chains (e.g. Waldenbooks, Border's, Barnes & Noble) in the late 70s and early 80s in malls in the burbs just to stand and look through the college sports preview magazines, and only buying them if they had favorable blurbs about the Illini or their recruiting (as you might guess, even then I bought a few more basketball publications than football). I'm guessing that your coverage will have at least a few of those. Funny how what I read in those publications to this day influence the schools I perceive as "blue bloods" in their respective sports, recent history be damned.
