Looks Like University Of Illinois - Trevon Sidney

Be very skeptical when you read the word "tomorrow" here. On Monday night I wrote that the Trevon Sidney LLUOI post would be up "tomorrow". It's now 11:35 Wednesday night, I just got home from work, and I now finally have time to write the Trevon Sidney LLUOI post.

Sidney is the second of two USC transfers. Who's our in at USC? DL coach Austin Clark was a graduate assistant there and CB coach Keynodo Hudson was a "defensive administrative assistant" there before moving on to Florida Atlantic with Lane Kiffin to be a CB coach. With those connections, we got Wole Betiku and Trevon Sidney to visit, and both have now chosen Illinois as their transfer destination. Both are also graduating in three years, so both will have two years of eligibility in Champaign.

Even though Betiku was rated much higher, Sidney is the bigger get (to me). Not only because of our need for wide receivers, but also because he might be really good and simply buried on a ridiculous depth chart of 4-5 NFL receivers.

How ridiculous? I looked up the spring depth chart for USC football and this is what I found:

WR-X: Tyler Vaughns (ranked #30 nationally in his class) | Drake London (ranked #247)
WR-Z: Michael Pittman (ranked #59) | Devon Williams (ranked #40)
WR-slot: Amon-ra St. Brown (ranked #11) | John Jackson III (ranked #563)

That was what Sidney was looking at. Reading some USC stuff from this spring, it appears that they're looking at four main receivers this season: St. Brown, Pittman, Vaughns, and Williams. All four were top-60 recruits coming out of high school. Plus they're adding Kyle Ford (the #38 player in the 2019 class) this summer. Sidney looked at that (and the fact that he was fourth behind St. Brown, Pittman, and Vaughns in receiving yards last year) and decided to look elsewhere for receptions. Thankfully, in that search, he landed on Champaign.

Are there receptions to be had in Champaign? Oh, I don't know, only possibly the most available receptions in all of Power Five football. I tweeted my concern level for every offensive positions after Saturday's spring game and I put wide receiver at an eight. It is a massive, massive concern. One which we thought we fixed with Jeff Thomas, but he went back to Miami. And we thought we fixed it with AD Miller, but he never left Oklahoma. So now we turn to Trevon Sidney.

And we might really turn to Trevon Sidney. There's a decent chance he finishes first or second in receptions this season, I think. I know that there are guys who know this system well (like Ricky Smalling, who caught 33 passes last year, and Trenard Davis, who caught 30), but there's still a big opportunity here for Sidney to be the leading receiver. Especially since he's a slot guy, and we didn't really have a slot guy last year after Dudek got hurt in the first game. Well, that's probably unfair to Dominic Stampley, who really came on in the second half of the season, but my point: I think Sidney will get every opportunity to catch 50+ passes.

What kind of receiver is he? The comp here is Dudek, although he obviously won't be healthy-freshman-year-1,000-yards-receiving Dudek. I'm just saying he's a similar player to Mikey - shorter, faster, quick in and out of cuts, good hands, can make the circus catch. Again, one more time, he's not going to be 2014 Dudek, but that's the type of receiver we're getting.

By the way, if you want to see what I mean by "can make the circus catch", check out this video.

That's a receiver I think Rod Smith can use. I think we saw with Stampley that Rod wants to run some crossing stuff for slot guys. And with a quick receiver like Sidney on board now, I think he'll use that.

Say what now? Do we have a quarterback who can get him the ball? Sorry, can't hear you, sounds like you're breaking up{chhhhhhhhhhhh}

Tom Cruises. I like him more than Betiku, I think. I think he has a better chance to contribute. I don't think he's quite a 4 Cruise player, but I do think he's a solid 3.5 Cruiser.

Trevon Sidney - Three and one-half Tom Cruises.

When healthy, a quick receiver who runs tight routes & has ridiculous hands! Christmas has come early, but who can throw him the ball accurately & on time??

"Sorry, can't hear you, sounds like you're breaking up{chhhhhhhhhhhh}"

One of your better lines in quite some time.

IW rolls, lbs bite, safety gets caught looking in backfield and Sidney leaks across middle and down the sideline where he's pushed out after a 30 yard gain....this might just happen more than once on any given Saturday this fall. Adding all that speed at RB - some will be used in slot - and at QB this could end up being a more explosive offense than last year.
The spring game WRs were limited. Plenty of guys that were sitting out, add the two transfers to that group and it looks pretty deep actually IMO. I know Ricky was blanketed all day but he might have been covered by a future NFLer. Ricky might be the third/fourth option by game 1, two transfer WRs and Luke Ford. Love the Sidney pickup!

If you take the comparison of the two players out of this paragrahp: "What kind of receiver is he? The comp here is Dudek, although he obviously won't be healthy-freshman-year-1,000-yards-receiving Dudek. I'm just saying he's a similar player to Mikey - shorter, faster, quick in and out of cuts, good hands, can make the circus catch. Again, one more time, he's not going to be 2014 Dudek, but that's the type of receiver we're getting."

and just say "What kind of receiver is he? Shorter, faster, quick in and out of cuts, good hands, can make the circus catch." it is much easier to understand and prevents any confusion or controversy.

Everything doesn't have to compare to something else. it's been getting hard to slog through this stuff.

“Slog Though”. It took me about three minutes to read through the whole article. If Robert wants to say he’s a poor man Dudek, most of us get the reference. It’s not making it more difficult to understand and causing confusion.

+1... keep the comps coming Robert!

I like Robert comps...mine would be crossing Chewbacca, Millhouse, with a dash of Stephen King's impending doom

Good grief. We all knew what Robert meant.
