I wrote the Kerby Joseph 90i post yesterday and then this morning it's announced that he moved from safety to wide receiver. So now I'm going to write the Desmond Dan post and tomorrow he'll switch to safety or something. You know, we do have 13 wide receivers and only four cornerbacks...
42. Desmond Dan
Uniform number: 10
Year in school: Senior (1 year to play 1)
Height: 6'-3" -- Weight: 195 lbs.
Hometown: Muscogee, Oklahoma
High School: Checotah HS
Former team: Transfer from New Mexico State
Tom Cruise rating: 1 Cruise
2019 statistics: Played in 3 games at New Mexico State with 5 catches for 49 yards before an injury ended his season.
There were two offseason transfers who were a little head-scratchy to me. One was Chinedu Udeogu, a backup tight end from Cal who grad transferred to Illinois to play defensive tackle. I gave him 0.5 Cruises (and we'll never know if I was wrong because he already left the team). The other was Desmond Dan, who I gave one Cruise. Just wasn't sure why "New Mexico State's fourth-leading receiver in 2018 who only played in three games in 2019 will now transfer to Illinois" was a thing.
That was probably a little harsh, so I've moved him up to #42 on this list. I'm the guy who always talks about seniors, right? So if some sophomore receiver at New Mexico State has 37 catches for 491 yards and then he misses most of the next season because of an injury, I should be all over "this might be a player primed for a breakout season", right?
So I'm keeping an open mind here. He's changed the name he goes by (I hear that's a popular thing to do). His full name is Desmond Drew Dan Jr, and Desmond Drew Dan Sr. went by Desmond so DDD2 went by Drew. New Mexico State roster? Lists him as Drew. NMSU highlights? He's referred to as Drew. Illinois roster? Listed as Desmond.
Let's just stick with DDD, OK? Farmer, farmer, put away your DDD. I don't care about spots on my apples, give me the birds and the bees.
WAIT, no, he needs to be known as triple-D.
OK, now he needs to have 37 catches so I can have some fun with this.
How do you begin to break down the wide receivers? Here's the full list (and I'm not even mentioning the walkons):
Josh Imatorbhebhe (SR)
Trevon Sidney (SR)
Desmond Drew Dan (SR)
Donny Navarro (JR)
Brian Hightower (JR)
Kerby Joseph (JR)
Khmari Thompson (SO)
Casey Washington (SO)
Dalevon Campbell (SO)
Carlos Sandy (SO)
Kyron Cumby (FR)
James Frenchie (FR)
12 wide receivers. Had Ricky Smalling returned and Edwin Carter not left, 14.
If I had to guess the top five in terms of receptions, I'd say Bhebhe, Navarro, Sidney, Washington, and Hightower. After that? I honestly have no clue.
It's into that void where DDD needs to step. He's the other senior. Go grab that spot and grab those catches.
Take us to Flavortown, triple-D.
