We Love No Other 5.13 - Bret Bielema One Year In

One year ago, on the Saturday before Christmas, Illinois played a "bonus" game at Penn State. Lovie Smith had been fired the day after the Northwestern game, and Rod Smith was coaching the team in a fairly meaningless add-on game. That was also the same day that Bret Bielema was hired as the new head coach. So just by the fact that I was the only person dumb enough to travel to Penn State to watch that meaningless game, I got the first interview with him.

It's now a year later. A year and two days, to be exact. So I asked if I could sit down with him again and go over his first 365 days as the head coach of the Illinois football program. That interview happened this morning, and... I should just stop talking now and get to the audio.

The interview can be found on Apple Podcasts here, on Spotify here, or you can just listen on the player below.

There is absolutely no way Lovie would have done a one-on-one with Robert. This interview really speaks to how media-savvy Coach Bielema is, and how he understands the necessity of getting the word out to the fans.

And I just love the honesty here, about his career and the town and progress and what it takes to win (and not lose) footballs games.

Fantastic interview, Robert. Thanks!

Yeah, that was really great. Maybe we're all wrong, but it does seem that he's in exactly the right spot for him, and he knows it.

Excellent. It’s great to have you both in Champaign!

So refreshing to listen to the two of you bubbling with enthusiasm for the jobs you get to do. Coach B. was very gracious to grant you the time and you made the most of it Robert. Thanks for allowing us to listen to this conversation.
