I'm trying to remember another transfer like Hudson. Walkon who played on special teams at Georgia for four years and eventually was put on scholarship. But he wanted a shot at more than just special teams snaps, so he transferred for his final year somewhere else.
Usually, when a player is put on scholarship, they finish out their career with the school that put them on scholarship. But Covid opened up this new opportunity. Everyone gets an extra year, and not all walkon-turned-scholarship-player student athletes will get that extra year at their original school. So it's off to Illinois for one more year of ball.
41. Prather Hudson
Uniform number: 24
Year in school: Senior (1 year to play 1)
Height: 5'-11" -- Weight: 200 lbs.
Hometown: Columbus, Georgia
Former School: Georgia
Five best offers: n/a - was a walkon at Georgia
Tom Cruise rating:
2020 statistics: Played in all 10 games at Georgia, mostly on special teams.
First off, I don't believe any Illini athlete has ever had a tweet get 70,000 retweets and 367,000 likes. In fact, I can say for a fact that it hasn't happened.
But it did for Prather Hudson:
Hey @LauraMRutledge really sorry I knocked you down, but... I can pick you up at 7 😎 https://t.co/jkHsTsLk0s— Prather Hudson (@PRAYHUD) November 20, 2018
I guess I covered the rest of Hudson's background above. Walked on at Georgia. Was their special teams heart-and-soul guy for four years. Bounced back and forth between running back and defensive back but never really got in the rotation (occasionally got 4th quarter carries here and there). Now he transfers to Illinois in hopes of more than just special teams snaps.
The safety position is wide open. I feel like I can say with 94% certainty that the starters at cornerback will be Tony Adams and Devon Witherspoon. I can probably only guess the starters at safety (right now I have Sydney Brown and Quan Martin) with 41% certainty. Might it be Alabama transfer Eddie Smith? One of the freshmen? Converted quarterback Coran Taylor? Prather Hudson?
If Hudson was wondering if he picked the right place to go battle for snaps at his position and not just special teams, this is me assuring him that he did. If he was looking for snaps at offensive tackle this year, well, son, there's two four-year starters returning for their fifth seasons. If he's looking for snaps at safety, well, it's a new scheme with new safety responsibilities and a wide open battle. May the best two safeties win.
I'm also kinda looking forward to Hudson v. Bobak. MMA? No, Special Teams Specialist. As noted in the LLUOI post linked above, in their four-year walkon-turned-scholarship-player careers...
Christian Bobak special teams snaps per PFF: 758
Prather Hudson special teams snaps per PFF: 798
Two heart-and-soul-of-the-coverage-team guys now on the same team. Let's go tackle every kickoff returner at the eleven.
