We Love No Other - Summer Podcast Series

Jun 6, 2022

I'm super excited about this. So much so that I want to "announce" it.

Welcome to my summer podcast series. For the next eight weeks - the four Mondays in June and the four Mondays in July - I'll be going through a five-year chunk of Illinois basketball history each week. Some of the podcasts might be two hours long but that's kind of the point. Younger fans might not know anything about the 1992 season, but I was there in the Orange Crush (with a "C" back then) so I can tell you about getting mad at the dude in front of me who kept saying "Bricks Taylor" instead of Brooks Taylor.

I've chosen to begin with 1983. My first real Illini basketball memories are from the 1983 season (when I was 10 years old), and my first "follow every game" season was 1984, so that sets up for a very neat and tidy schedule for this series:

June 6: 1983 through 1987
June 13: 1988~1992
June 20: 1993~1997
June 27: 1998~2002
July 4: 2003~2007
July 11: 2008~2012
July 18: 2013~2017
July 25: 2018~2022

For each week I'll have a different guest join me. Next week, for example, it will be Tyler joining me because 88-92 covers his years in school (including the 1989 team when he was a walkon). For this first episode - 1983 through 1987 - I asked Loren Tate to join me. Who better to talk about how The 80's Belonged To The Illini than the guy who was there at every game?

The episode is linked below. We (of course) discuss the Dickie Beal travel in the Kentucky Elite Eight game (in 1984), so if you've never seen it, here's the (grainy) video. The Illini are trailing by two (at Kentucky - this is the game that brought on the "you can't play an NCAA Tournament game on your home court" rule) and this happens:

If only Twitter existed back then.

Anyway, I just felt like you needed to watch that before you listen to the podcast. You can get this first episode on Apple Podcasts here, on Spotify here, or just search for We Love No Other wherever you download podcasts. And if you can't wait and are ready to hear about Anthony Welch and Jens Kujawa right now, you can listen using the player below.

If you can't tell, I'm really excited about this. Big thanks to Jonny from our basketball podcast (The Board Room) for giving me the idea. Here's the first episode:
