Those Were The Days - Kansas
I completely forgot to publish the TWTD last week. Chalk it up as one more thing I didn't get finished before the season started. Detlef wrote it, but I didn't get it published. Blame it on the fire truck.
But I remembered today. If you're unfamiliar with the series, it predates me. Detlef started writing these in maybe 2003 or 2004 when Brumby needed some pregame football content. So when I combined my blog with IlliniBoard in 2013, Brumby and I decided to bring it back.
There's only one rule: I get full editorial control over Detlef. If I gave him access to the publish button, he'd almost certainly sleepwalk over to his computer in the middle of the night and write a 6,000-word post on Ron Guenther. So we developed this leash law for our safety (and yours).
You missed the EIU article last week, but here's his Those Were The Days article for Kansas. He's taking us all the way back to 1917 with this one. Yes, the photo above is from 1915, but it's still good to remember that we used to play football games at Illinois Field up on the engineering campus where the Beckman Institute stands today.
Here's Detlef:
Illinois hosts Kansas this week despite rumors this past off-season that Illinois was cancelling the series. I would have been happy with that. I would rather play Perpetual Sisters of Mercy than a Power 5 non-conference team. I DEMAND BOWL ELIGIBILITY! Of course, Illinois agreed to this series when both schools were down. Thus, when Illinois plays at Duke next season, I expect Duke to be a powerhouse.
Last year I attended the debacle in Lawrence. I hope to see a victory this year in Champaign. Today’s tale recalls when football was the last thing on the minds of many Americans.
